Jewellery Care

All types of jewellery should be handled with lots of care and consideration, often jewellery is an investment that people cherish and hold sentimental value to, which is why it is important to keep them looking pristine. You should regularly check your jewellery for any signs of damage or wear & tear, and if you do find any, we recommend having them fixed as soon as possible. Whether it’s a delicate pearl necklace, a luxurious diamond engagement ring or a beautiful gold bracelet, we have all the advice you need for protecting your divine jewellery.

Caring for Diamonds

Take quality care of your diamond jewellery to help maintain its incredible sparkle and stand the test of time, you must consider the cleaning and storing processes you take to ensure good up-keep of your diamond rings, bracelets, necklaces and more.

How to store diamonds:

  • Storage of your diamonds is vital, as one diamond can easily scratch and cause damage to another, we recommend that you make sure to store them separately, either within a jewellery box, original box they are purchased in or a soft pouch.

How to clean diamonds:

  • Cleaning your diamonds should be done as delicately as possible, gently clean with a mild cleaning solution, then rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth, this will help ensure the diamonds keep their luster.

Caring for Silver

Keep your silver jewellery looking spotless, these recommendations will help you refrain from any misuse and guide you on the best ways to store and clean your silver.

How to store silver:

  • When storing your silver jewellery, it is best kept in a soft pouch to prevent scratches from another jewellery piece. Also, ensure to keep silver stored out of bright sunlight when not being worn, as this can lead to discoloration.

How to clean silver:

  • If you are cleaning silver at home, we recommend avoiding contact with perfume, hairspray and any strong domestic cleaning products as this can impact the shine of the silver. Simply use washing up liquid in warm water and a soft toothbrush to gently clean your silver jewellery.

Caring for Platinum

Our noble platinum metals consist of 95% pure platinum and like all precious metals, platinum can scratch and dent when not handled with delicacy and care. Whether you’re caring for a platinum ring, chain or bracelet, to maintain your platinum’s beautiful finish, it is recommended that you avoid wearing when carrying out heavy duties, sports or any activities where it could potentially come into contact with hard surfaces.

How to store platinum:

  • Although the scratches and dents that occur on platinum pieces are just movement of the metal, and no volume is actually lost, to help avoid any defects it is recommended to store platinum jewellery separate from other pieces within a jewellery box or inside a soft pouch.

How to clean platinum:

  • When it comes to cleaning your platinum jewellery it is important not to use any harsh chemicals, as this may lead to discoloration, however you can use soap and warm water to soak the pieces in and then dry with a soft cloth. If there are existing heavy marks that will not wash off, these can be removed by polishing.

Caring for Gold

Ensure your gold jewellery keeps its timeless look and can be enjoyed for years to come, by following our recommendations on how to store and clean gold pieces. If your jewellery is white gold, it is important to consider that they are enhanced with rhodium plating, giving a highly reflective white surface which overtime may lose brightness. H.Samuel will re-rhodium plate any white gold jewellery that is purchased from us, free of charge within 12 months, as long as you have proof of purchase.

How to store gold:

  • Whether you’re caring for a gold ring, necklace, bracelet or more, when it comes to storing your gold jewellery, it is recommended to keep separate from other metal types, in order to avoid risk of discoloration.

How to clean gold:

  • It is important to keep gold jewellery away from any chlorine and harsh chemicals as this can weaken the structure and tarnish the finish to your jewellery. Polish gold jewellery regularly to maintain its vibrant shine by soaking in soap and water and cleaning with a soft cloth.

Caring for Gemstones

Whether you have a ruby, sapphire, topaz or amethyst- every gemstone is precious, so make sure to take care & consideration when cleaning and storing your beautiful gemstone pieces.

How to store gemstones:

  • After wearing your gemstone jewellery, it is best to keep them inside a soft pouch or lined jewellery box as this will avoid any scratches or marking to the gemstone.

How to clean gemstones:

  • Avoid contact with soap, water and liquid cleaners, depending on the gemstone type. It is also best to avoid any harsh chemicals including chlorine or detergents, as they can erode the gems and cause dulling. If you are uncertain about the cleaning process of your specific gemstone, please ask a member of our friendly team for further advice.

Caring for Pearls

Pearls are unique, delicate gems that are classed as soft stones and therefore need to be dealt with extra care and consideration.

How to store pearls:

  • If possible, store your pearl jewellery in the original box it was purchased in, this can avoid them from being scratched by other stones or precious metals. If you get a lot of wear out of your pearl jewellery, they will need restringing roughly every year, so ensure to check for any damage and bring them along to your local H.Samuel store if they need any special attention! How to clean pearls:

  • It is best to simply clean pearls with a dry or damp soft cloth. Due to pearls being a soft stone they have a low resistance to heat and chemicals so it is important to avoid using any cleaning solutions and direct contact with perfume as this can affect the pearls appearance.
