You may have heard that diamonds are your best friend. That being said, cubic zirconia deserves BFF status, too. Ready to get clued up on why we love this fresh gemstone? Here’s the lowdown on cubic zirconia...

What is Cubic Zirconia?

First up, the science bit. Cubic zirconia is a synthetic gemstone that’s created in a lab instead of being mined from the earth, so no worries about the environmental impact of the jewellery. It can be made to be virtually colourless (just like a diamond) as well coming in a range of different hues. The best bit? It’s designed to match the look, beauty and clarity of a diamond – but costs just a fraction of the price. And believe us when we say: it’s difficult for the untrained eye to tell the two apart.

Scoring an 8.5 on the Mohs scale (which measures the scratch resistance of a mineral) compared to a diamond’s 10, cubic zirconia is still strong and durable enough to wear every day. Even better, it can be made to match all of the popular diamond cuts. So, if you’re after a classic solitaire, an eye-catching pear or a look-at-me princess cut, cubic zirconia has every base covered.

Shiny, sparkly and oh-so-wearable (AKA everything we look for in jewellery), cubic zirconia can be worn with just about anything and at a price that doesn’t put an uncomfortable dent in your wallet. It’s also perfect for affordable gifting, whether you're looking for yourself, or if you want to treat someone to something extra special. *chef’s kiss*

How is Cubic Zirconia Made?

From bracelets and rings, to pendants and necklaces, cubic zirconia jewellery will never go out of style. But how are these beautiful gemstones actually made? Generally, they’re formed when zirconium dioxide, mixed with a stabiliser, is melted at incredibly high temperatures of around 2750°C for several hours to evaporate any impurities. Once it’s cooled, it crystallises to form gemstones. The final process is to expertly cut and polish the cubic zirconia stone, which is then ready to be set into jewellery.

What is the Value of Cubic Zirconia?

By now you’re likely aware of the many benefits of cubic zirconia. It’s biggest appeal? It’s much cheaper than diamonds. The price of diamonds is reflected in their scarcity and natural beauty, yet the value of cubic zirconia is mostly determined by its setting – whether that's sterling silver or yellow gold. Some luxuries justify the splurge, but while it’s worth saving up for certain pieces (a-hem diamond engagement rings) there’s still plenty of striking jewellery that you can afford to save on. So, why drop all your cash if you don't have to? The value of jewellery isn’t always measured on how much it costs either. For many of us, it’s the sentiment that makes something special. After all, a well-thought-out gift with meaning behind it can’t be beat.

How to Tell Cubic Zirconia from a Diamond

Considering the price difference, it’s not easy to tell between the two gemstones. Cubic zirconia differs from diamonds in density, which means that the same sized cubic zirconia stone would be much heavier than a diamond equivalent. But without scales, the simplest way to tell them apart is to look at how natural light passes through. A diamond will show dazzling white light (known as brilliance) and cubic zirconia will display a much more coloured light, which is almost rainbow-like in appearance.

How to Clean Cubic Zirconia Jewellery

Luckily, cleaning cubic zirconia jewellery really isn't that time-consuming. The key to cleaning cubic zirconia without causing any damage is by using a non-abrasive product. Putting a little washing up liquid into a bowl of warm water will do the trick, and you can tackle any stubborn marks or hard to reach places with a soft brush. Then, all you need to do is dry the jewellery with a lint-free cloth. Restoring your cubic zirconia to its brilliant best really is as simple as that.
