Sourcing Diamonds Responsibly

When it comes to our priorities here at H.Samuel, the transparent sourcing of diamonds comes very high up on our list. We're committed to driving forward conflict free diamond sourcing around the world.

In collaboration with our international suppliers, our diamond jewellery collection has been sourced and produced responsibly with clear processes in place at each stage of the sourcing journey.

Ending the flow of conflict diamonds

Conflict free diamonds are those that have been sourced and acquired in a way that is respectful of human rights and do not contribute to the financing of wars and terrorism by rebel groups.

Using legislation, lengthy processes and clarity in the supply chain, we are successfully contributing to ending the sale of conflict diamonds in the industry. Procedures are in place to ensure transparency with all our suppliers when it comes to diamond sourcing - whether they are loose, rough or polished, as well as diamonds set into finished jewellery.

Our journey of responsible jewellery sourcing

For over two decades, we have been founding members of the World Diamond Council (WDC), striving towards better standards in the diamond sourcing industry.

Since then we have created systems and policies with industry partners to develop continuous improvement in the integrity of sourcing in the global jewellery supply chain. The Signet Responsible Sourcing Protocol (SRSP) is our set of rigorous, best practice sourcing standards ensuring our supply chain is free of any contribution to conflict or abuse of human rights. Our SRSP goes beyond the legal requirements, with aspects regularly updated.

Most recently, in 2021 we joined the Responsible Jewellery Council’s Sustainable Development Goal Taskforce, as well as the UN Global Compact – the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative tackling human rights, labour, anti-corruption and environmental issues.

What is the Kimberley Process and how does it help?

The Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme that regulates the commercial sale of diamonds. Forming part of the Clean Diamonds Trade Act (CDTA), it requires all imported diamonds to have a Kimberley Process certificate, aiming to reduce the flow of conflict diamonds sold around the world.

The Kimberley Process relies on the contributions of its participants in 82 international countries and offers a set of minimum requirements that each participant must meet. It is underpinned by the United Nations mandate and is backed by the leading civil organisations.

Our five-step guidance process

As part of our best-practice efforts to ensure responsible diamond sourcing, we follow a five-step guidance process to ensure due diligence from conflict-affected and high-risk areas.

The steps include establishing strong company management systems, identifying risks in the supply chain, implementing strategies to respond to these risks, supporting third-party audits and reporting annually on supply chain due diligence.

Testing for natural diamonds

We are responsible for sharing truthful information about diamonds to all our customers. This includes differentiation between natural diamonds and laboratory grown diamonds. For this reason, we launched Project ASSURE, in partnership with De Beers and the Natural Diamond Council; to reassure our customers that the diamonds they are purchasing are of 100% natural origin.

We distinguish between natural diamonds and laboratory grown diamonds using special detection equipment and verification instruments under the ASSURE standard - helping to maintain the integrity of the natural diamond supply chain. Therefore, our customers can have complete peace of mind and confidence when buying diamonds from us.

Our diamond warranty

All rough and polished diamonds bought or sold by H.Samuel include the System of Warranties statement developed by the International Diamond Manufacturers Association, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and the WDC:

“Any natural diamonds herein supplied have been purchased from legitimate sources not involved in funding conflict and in compliance with United Nations Resolutions and corresponding national laws. The seller hereby guarantees that these natural diamonds are conflict-free and confirms adherence to the WDC SOW Guidelines.”
