How should I clean my watch?

Every so often wipe your watch case and bracelet with a soft, dry cloth, to help prevent dust and grime building up. H.Samuel Instant Shine cleaning wipes are also a handy way to remove residue.

How do I look after my waterproof watch?

Even if your watch is water resistant, you must still clean and dry the case and bracelet after contact with water. We strongly recommend you have the water resistance tested annually to avoid any mishaps!

Other handy tips

  • Avoid direct contact with many everyday items such as perfume and hairspray. These contain chemical compounds which can affect the appearance of your watch.
  • Watch glass is often made of hardened glass or crystal, making it highly resistant to scratching or marking. Damage can occur, however, if the glass comes into contact with particularly hard materials.

How long will a repair take?

Most standard repairs will be available for collection within 2-3 weeks, but more complicated repairs may take a little longer. Our staff will be able to give you a timeframe once they've seen the work that needs to be done.

How much will it cost?

This depends on the type of watch and what work is required. Speak to a member of staff about your specific repair, and we will give you a FREE estimate.

Jewellery Care

All types of jewellery should be treated with a lot of tender loving care to keep it looking its best. It is also important to regularly check your jewellery for signs of damage or wear and tear. If you find any, get it fixed as soon as possible.

The Magic of Diamonds

Your diamond will last forever, but special care should be given to cleaning and storing to maintain its brilliance and sparkle.

One diamond can scratch another so it's best to store them separately. To help keep their lustre gently clean with a mild cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.

Remember try not to wear your diamond when doing rough work. Even though diamonds are durable, they can be chipped by a hard knock.

The Magic of Silver

The best way to keep your silver looking great is to wear it as often as you can. When it's not being worn, it's best to store it away in a soft pouch to help prevent scratches from other pieces of jewellery.

To maintain the shine on your silver, avoid contact with perfume, hairspray and domestic cleaning products. Also, if your silver comes into contact with water dry it immediately to avoid any lasting stains.

The Magic of Platinum

Platinum is a Noble metal and ours consists of 95% pure platinum and 5% other elements.

These are added to the purest of platinum to enable improved designs and appearance which make the final product all the more attractive. This is especially true for delicate diamond set rings and highly polished wedding bands.

Like all precious metals, platinum scratches and dents when it comes into contact with harder elements. It's recommended that your platinum ring isn't worn when carrying out heavy chores, sports and other activities where it might come in to contact with hard surfaces.

However, the scratches and dents that occur are just a movement of the metal and none of its volume is lost. Even though daily wear may leave an impression on the surface, over a period of time it creates a natural patina over the outer surface that doesn't impair the quality of your jewellery. In more severe instances where the jewellery is accidentally knocked heavy marks can be removed by polishing.

The Magic of Gold

To enjoy your gold for years to come, polish regularly with a soft cloth to bring out its vibrant shine. It's also best to store your gold jewellery separately to avoid discolouration from other metal types.

As with most types of jewellery, contact with chlorinated water can attack the surface of gold and result in damage to its appearance.

It's best to remove your jewellery when you go swimming and everyday items such as perfume, hairspray and cleaning products can also tarnish your gold.

White gold care

Most white gold items are enhanced with rhodium plating, giving a highly reflective white surface. Over time, this surface may lose some brightness, which is perfectly normal. We will re-rhodium plate any white gold jewellery which was bought from us free of charge within 12 months, as long as you have proof of purchase.

The Magic of Gemstones

Ruby, sapphire, topaz or amethyst - all gemstones are precious. So, after wearing your gemstone jewellery it's best to store it in a soft pouch or lined jewellery box.

For a quick clean, wipe the stones with a soft cloth. Some gemstones need to avoid contact with soap, water and liquid cleaners - if you are unsure of what's best for your jewellery please ask a member of staff. Also avoid harsh chemicals including chlorine or detergents making contact with your jewellery, as they may erode the gems and cause dulling.

The Magic of Pearls

Pearls are delicate gems, organic and one of a kind. They are classed as soft stones and have low resistance to heat and chemicals so avoid using any cleaning solutions on them.

As they are so delicate even direct contact with perfume can affect their appearance. It's best to simply clean them with a dry or damp soft cloth.

If possible store your pearl jewellery in the box they came in to avoid being scratched by other jewellery metals or stones. If you wear your pearls a lot they will need restringing every year or so, so keep an eye out for damage and bring them along to see us if they need any special attention.

How long will the repair take?

Where the repair is fairly minor, we can actually complete it in-store while you wait. Otherwise our staff will give you an estimated completion date when you book your jewellery in with us.

Our Sparkle Service Promise

All our repairs are guaranteed for 12 months. Your statutory rights are not affected. This covers workmanship and materials, and applies from the time you collect your repaired item from us.

Engraving

Add a personal touch by having a piece of jewellery or a gift engraved in a choice of modern or traditional fonts.

Whether you are celebrating an engagement, birthday, anniversary or simply saying thank you to a friend or your wedding guests, engraving adds an unforgettable personal touch to a gift.

If an item is suitable for engraving, there will be a tick box on the product information page which says "engrave this item". If there is no tick box, the item cannot be engraved.

How much does it cost?

You can have the message of your choice engraved as long as it fits on the item you've selected. The cost of engraving and a maximum character limit are shown below the product description on the product page. Therefore you can check the price and message length without any commitment. Here is a guide to our prices:

  • 21 for engraving the inside of a ring.
  • 16 for all other engravable products including watch backs or clasps and gift items such as tankards.
  • Unfortunately we are unable to offer the engraving service on lockets.

Please make sure that you enter your message correctly as engraved items cannot be refunded.

What are the delivery options?

Engraving orders can take between 3 to 8 working days to be processed and despatched dependant upon your chosen delivery method, therefore customers should allow for this additional time on top of our usual delivery times.

  • Standard delivery is available on engraving orders of under 149.
  • Next Day delivery is free on orders of 149 or more and will be automatically upgraded. Next Day delivery is not available for engraving orders under 149.
  • Free delivery to store is available on engraved items.
  • Yodel Neighbourhood courier service is not available on engraving orders.

Some more FAQ's

Can I have gift packaging?

Engraved items can be gift packaged, however we do not offer greetings cards with an engraved order.

Can I have more than one engraved item in my order?

If you want more than one engraved item you will have to place separate orders for each item you want engraved.

Can I have an engraved item and a non-engraved item in the same order?

You will need to place separate orders - one for the engraved item and one for the non-engraved item. This is because it takes between 3 to 8 working days for your engraved item to be despatched but just 2 to 3 working days for the non-engraved item to be despatched.

Can I return engraved items?

Engraved items cannot be returned unless the product is faulty. Please see our returns & exchanges section for details.

What if the engraved message on my item is incorrect?

The message that you type during the checkout process is the exact message that will be engraved, so please ensure that what you have typed is correct and does not have any errors.

How it works

Step 1 Ideas

Whether you want to create an engagement ring, pendant, earrings or brooch - anything is possible with our specialist design service. Visit any of our H.Samuel stores to discuss your design ideas and requirements.

Step 2 Choice

Once we have a full understanding of the piece you would like to create, we will help you choose the best materials, advising on gemstones, settings and metal types.

Step 3 Design

We will then send your ideas to our design team who will produce a detailed drawing of your design for your approval. You will see the full design right down to the shape and cut of the gemstones.

Step 4 Create

Once you are happy with your design, it will then be handcrafted by our expert design team. This should take around 6-10 weeks, depending on the complexity of your design.

Shaped wedding rings

We specialise in creating wedding rings that fit perfectly with your engagement ring. You can choose from our catalogue or simply create your own unique design to suit your style. After approving the detailed picture of your wedding ring, it will be manufactured and you'll have your very own designer ring in no time.

Unique piece of jewellery

Take the role of a designer and create your own jewellery. Design everything from rings and pendants to earrings and bracelets as well as much, much more. Our Birmingham workshop uses state-of-the art design software and traditional techniques to produce your design.

Resetting and re-styling

If you have a treasured piece of jewellery that you would like altered or updated, H.Samuel will give any piece of jewellery a well-deserved makeover.

Ring sizing

The easiest way to check your ring size is to come in to your local H.Samuel store where our friendly, fully trained staff will be happy to help you, free of charge. They will measure your finger using an industry-standard ring sizer.

Most of our ladies' rings are available in sizes I to S, and most of our men's rings in P to Z. We may be able to order rings outside this range, but they could take a couple of weeks to arrive. Alternatively, with some styles of ring, we may be able to resize another ring for you.

Samuel stores also hold Jewellery Valuation Event Days throughout the year where you'll have the opportunity to meet one of the Guild of Valuers and Jewellers expert valuers and have a personal jewellery or watch valuation face-to-face. After your appointment the valuer will print your valuation out and hand it to you before you leave the store.

The insurance service to protect your precious purchase.

All part of the service as the UK's leading jeweller, we want to ensure that you have years of enjoyment from your purchases at H.Samuel. As part of our superior service, we also offer you the choice of taking out PremierCare insurance.

Taking the option to purchase PremierCare ensures that the items you purchase from H.Samuel are protected in the event that they need to be repaired or replaced due to accidental damage, theft, robbery or as a result of standard peril such as damage or destruction caused by storm flood or fire. In addition, watches are covered for breakdown after the expiry of the manufacturers' guarantee.

The cover provides repair or replacement of your insured items. If we can repair the insured item to restore it back to its original condition, we will. However, if we are unable to repair it or, if the item has been stolen, we will provide a like for like replacement. If the original item is no longer available, we will provide you with a replacement item up to the original purchase price.

Depending on the insured goods full selling price, at time of purchase, goods can be covered for 2, 3 or 5 years.

Main Exclusions

  • Damage caused by general wear and tear, denting and scratching
  • If the item is stolen from a motor vehicle, unless the vehicle is locked at all points of access and all the security systems are activated and the insured item is concealed out of sight in the locked boot or locked glove compartment
  • If a theft is not accompanied by signs of force being used to enter or leave
  • If the insured goods have been lost or mysteriously disappeared

Cooling off period

If you change your mind, the policy can be cancelled within the first 30 days of cover. During this period a full refund of cover** will be given provided no claims have been made and the certificate is returned to the store.

** Charge for cover is the total amount payable by you in relation to this insurance.

Making a Claim

If you need to make a claim simply call into any H.Samuel store with the damaged item (where applicable), your certificate and your original till receipt. H.Samuel staff will be happy to assist you.

Administration and arrangement services agreement

  • H.Samuel will provide you with services in relation to arranging and administering this insurance including undertaking to assisting you in the making of any claim including valuing your claim, advising you in respect of the claims process and dealing with Assurant General Insurance Limited on your behalf.
  • In consideration of H.Samuel providing the services to you, it will be entitled to charge you a fee. This fee is payable to H.Samuel in addition to the premium due to Assurant General Insurance Limited under your insurance contract.
