Quartz Watches by Seiko

In 1969 Seiko launched the world's first quartz wristwatch, the Quartz Astron. The Astron was widely awarded and acclaimed for its innovation.

Applying a voltage to a fixed shape quartz crystal oscillator to produce a steady vibration was a long held idea for accurately keeping time but Seiko overcame the barriers to creating a smaller version suitable for use in watches. They achieved this by cutting the crystal oscillator in the shape of a tuning fork and then creating the circuit block that controls the output to produce precise watch signals.
