Meet Meg Waskett: Our Jewellery Writer And Editor

‘I think mixing metals is the best thing ever because most people don’t like it – I like to be different. Gold and silver complement each other – especially if you mix and match chunky silver and delicate. I don’t abide by any rules.’ - Meg Waskett.

30 JANUARY 2023 | MEG WASKETT - JEWELLERY WRITER AND EDITOR

She sets trends, she started layering gems and jewels (before it was cool) and she’s ALWAYS got a diamond sparkle in her smile. Fashion and Jewellery writer, Meg Waskett started at H. Samuel in April ’21 as Senior copywriter (now Copy Team Lead). She has over 15 years of industry experience as a trained fashion journalist and mid to heavyweight creative copywriter. Meg has a Masters in Fashion Journalism from the London College of Fashion and an endless stream of creativity and innovations – she loves to whip up multichannel copy quicker than you can say, ‘go bold with gold.’

How Long Have You Worked In The Jewellery Industry?

For the entirety of my career, I have dipped in and out of the jewellery industry. I’ve worked as a fashion buyer, on shop floors and behind the scenes with suppliers. In the end, my love for writing trumped every other job so I started copywriting about 6 years ago. Back then I was doing everything from product descriptions on jewellery, clothing and all elements of multichannel marketing. And now I’m the copy lead at H. Samuel.

What Is Your Favourite Style Of Jewellery?

I think mixing metals is the best thing ever because most people don’t like it – I like to be different. Gold and silver complement each other – especially if you mix and match chunky silver and delicate gold. It’s up to you what you wear, jewellery is your own style. I wear what I like at the time. I don’t abide by any rules.

My style of jewellery depends on the occasion and my outfit. I have the jewellery that I wear every day – in the shower, on the beach, in bed – that I don’t take off, like my delicate necklaces, diamond studs and ring stacks. When I’m going out, I wear chunkier, more statement pieces.

Gold or Silver?

Impossible to choose. I’d have to say both – and always together.

How Did You Get Into Writing About Jewellery?

I’ve always loved writing and I’ve done it on the side but never professionally until about six years ago. My undergrad in English Literature and Masters in Fashion Journalism is a good foundation for learning about what really matters when writing commercially. It makes you ask the questions that make the difference between a poorly written piece and a piece that really adds value for the reader. Like, what do customer’s really want to know? How will this benefit them? Why are they reading this in the first place?

What Are Your Favourite Jewellery Brands?

PDPaola does gemstones and delicate gold really well. The silhouettes are so unique, and they use gemstones in a striking way. Plus, it’s delicate enough for the everyday. I also love the stories behind Olivia Burton. They make unique one-off designs and it’s a cult brand started by a female founder. In terms of more long-standing brands, I love the heritage and the stories behind Cartier, it’s just really special. Plus, it cleverly brings its icons across all its product categories, Arnaud Carrez is a genius.

What Is The Most Interesting Thing You Have Learned About Jewellery Since Writing For The H. Samuel Blog?

How on-trend it can be. Of course, jewellery trends ebb and flow, much like any other fashion trend, but it’s much more fast-paced than I thought it would be. Jewellery is becoming more and more part of the seasonal catwalk in its own right. Lots of fashion designers are starting to create jewellery collections that (if they could) the pieces would march down the catwalk themselves. It doesn’t just support the clothing lines anymore; it is a line in itself with its own story to tell.

Also, how important the story behind the jewellery is. I knew there are heirloom pieces for example, but even with new pieces, you can create your own stories and it’s writing about that, that has made me think differently about that. That’s the beauty of writing for a blog: The research and time spent on a topic make you think outside the box.

If You Could Only Wear One Piece Of Jewellery For The Rest Of Your Life, What Would You Choose?

My diamond earrings. They’re a birthday present from my partner. He’s always said he wouldn’t buy me a pair as I am ‘guaranteed to lose them.’ But he did loads of diamond research on things like the 4C’s and got them made with the screw-backs, so they’ll never fall out. I just love them.
