Nao
Porcelain collectible figurines from Valencia.
Introduction
Nao porcelain figurines have been created and sculptured by skilled artisans in Valencia, Spain, since 1968. The production of hand made porcelain figurines has been a local tradition within the Valenican community since the Roman times and skills have passed down from generation to generation.
'Nao', pronounced 'n-o-w', is a type of sailing vessel; hence the sailing ship incorporated into the Nao logo.
Nao creations are produced using a combination of traditional porcelain manufacturing techniques and cutting edge technology, allowing Nao to delight new and existing collectors in over 122 countries worldwide.
Nao figurines have an individual charm and warmth that can capture any emotion perfectly, so there is a one to suit everybody and every occasion. There are currently over 200 figurines in the Nao catalogue. Each year, new figures are introduced to expand the range and develop new and exciting collections.
How is a Nao figurine created?
As all figurines are made by hand, the processes involved - from the initial design stage to how pieces appear in store - are complex and very time consuming.
The first stage of production for all Nao figurines is to segment the original piece into numerous components to create moulds. Depending on the complexity of the piece, moulds are only used a small number of times to ensure the level of detail remains true to the original creation.
Once the numerous components have been extracted from the moulds, the skilled craftsmen painstakingly recreate the original figurine using just porcelain paste. This method of assembly ensures that all joints are seamless and no unsightly glue or adhesive residue ruin the beauty and fluidity of the piece.
Following reconstruction, the craftsmen use natural vegetable dyes to hand paint the figurines. The individuality and freedom of expression that hand painting allows, ensures that no two figures are identical.
The figurines are sprayed with a glaze that seals in colour and gives the famous glossy look that makes a Nao piece so easily recognisable. Each is then fired in a kiln for almost 20 hours in temperatures exceeding 1,300ºC.
The final stage for all Nao figurines is the rigorous quality control checks that guarantee the high level of quality that has become famous worldwide. Each Nao box is designed for the individual figurine and provides the essential protection needed to keep the piece in pristine condition during transit from Valencia.
