Young Lives vs Cancer: Have you got your heart of gold?

Young Lives vs Cancer is the charity that helps children and young people, and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But they can’t do it without the help of all of us. So, we’ve stepped up to do our bit and you can, too. To support this crucial cause, throughout September you can buy any heart-shaped jewellery or locket in store or online at H. Samuel and 10% of the profits will be donated to Young Lives vs Cancer.

Be bold, go gold

Now, you may or may not have noticed that yellow gold is having a big moment right now (and not just on the runway). Young Lives vs Cancer Be Bold, Go Gold Awareness Month campaign, is the reason why this sunshine hue is so sought after this September. For those who don’t know, gold is the international colour of childhood cancer awareness, and people around the world wear a gold ribbon in September to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In support, we’ve pulled together an edit of our favourite gold jewellery pieces (hearts and all). Plus, we’ve come up with four ways to style them, from necklace layering to earring stacks, coloured gems, and mixing metals. So, wear your heart on your sleeve and around your neck (or in your ears), because after all, much like chocolate, you can never have too much gold jewellery, right?

  1. Everyday chains, elevated

Gold chains veer into on-trend territory when you embellish them with pendants or work in two or three different necklaces, like choker-length links and a sleek curb chain. Remember, double (or triple) the chains, double the impact.

Layering is also a way to make your style unique, and constantly reinvent yourself depending on your mood. And for us, it’s all about more is more. It’s a great opportunity to layer all kinds of necklaces, from heart pendants to fine belcher chains and chunkier figaro pieces. All in all, it’s about having some fun, mixing and matching textures and adding a pendant or two for a personalised touch.

Pro tip: Follow the rule of three – three weights, three different links, three lengths. Want to know more? You can find more of our layering tips in our blog Ania Haie: A brand to watch.

2. Ear party essentials

Stacking earrings is another way to make your jewellery look very 2021. When it comes to wearing this season's cutest, itty-bitty earrings, the more the better. Blake Lively, Emma Stone, and Cara Delevingne are just a few of the celebs who have been rocking shiny ear trinkets in customisable stacks. The best part? Albeit small, these delicate accessories make just as much of a style statement as large chunky hoops (plus, it’s personal to you). After seasons of oversize baubles, tiny studs in all different shapes, ear cuffs and huggies, specifically made for building your very own earring stack, are a very welcome change.

If you want to try the trend, there really are no limits. You can keep it minimal and opt for an earful of studs or mix in some small hoops to add contrast. Also, don’t be afraid to mix and match gold and silver. Since, this old-fashion rule no longer applies, we’ll be loading up on both metals for a unique look (more on this later). In the meantime, here are some other tips on how we’re styling a good #earparty:

  • Back to basics – Proving small things can bring big character, a curated selection of hearts, hoops, curves and cuffs are the perfect starting points to your ear stack.
  • Make a statement – as with layering necklaces more is more. Level up with a gemstone chain drop earring to lend your subtle pieces some drama.
  • Wear them as they come or split them – split your paired studs for different looks to make your money work harder.

3. Coloured stones

Thanks to their spiritual sentiments, as well as a welcome dose of colour, birthstones and rainbow-hued jewels are taking the spotlight this summer. Adding even more meaning to hearts, red rubies, purple amethysts and blue sapphires make gold jewellery pop. But the best bit about these jewels, is the meaning behind the stones. From representing your birth month to luck, love, protection and prosperity, these are the jewels that have got your back. Whether you’re into their meaning or just want to lend your look some colour, mix and match these pieces for the ultimate expression of individuality.

4. Mix your metals

Mixing jewellery metals is a huge summer trend, and nothing says Insta-worthy than a cool, eclectic mix of gold and silver jewellery. Plus, it helps to curate your own personal style, too. These are our tips on how to do it:

  • It’s all about balance – Make sure you’re mixing your metal colours across all pieces of jewellery.
  • Shape and size matters – Have a dainty addiction? Stick to delicate pieces. They are also inherently subtler to play with, so this is a good place to start. But, if you like to go big and bold, then make a statement by mixing chunkier pieces in different finishes to make an impact.
  • Pile trends on trends – We’re huge fans of earring stacking and necklace layering, and we love how a combination of gold and silver promises to take your stacks to the next level. The earring stack is an easy way to mix metals as the pieces are so dainty. For example, mixing huggies and studs makes the perfect everyday look, while larger hoops in different coloured metals are an eye-catching accent for going out vibes
  • Pick a pendant – When mixing metals, it's a good idea to add a focal point, like a heart pendant, to pull the look together and add depth and texture.
