Watch Buyers Guide: Watch Movements

Mechanical Watch Movements

The skills and craftsmanship required to hand-make watches are still with us today, but most watches on the market these days are made on a production line. This doesn't mean, however, that mechanical watches are any less valuable. A mechanical watch, although usually requiring winding up, will keep very accurate time.

Wind up: The traditional watch wearer enjoys the contact of winding up their watch. There is something classic and enjoyable about interacting with a well made watch. However, you do have to remember to wind your watch up, or you might miss an important appointment.

Automatic: An automatic watch is a mechanical watch that typically has a balance wheel escapement which automatically winds the watch in response to the movement of the wearers arm. In other words, the wearer's movement winds the watch up.
