Chic palladium has been used as a precious metal since 1939, but has recently seen an upsurge in popularity to become one of our most fashionable metals. Part of the reason for this is that not only does it look elegant and stylish, but it is also tarnish resistant.
Perfect in all types of jewellery, it is an ideal substitute for white gold. Palladium jewellery at H.Samuel includes a stunning range of bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings. Equally elegant when set with diamonds or precious gemstones, palladium is also a sophisticated precious metal in its own right. Palladium is particularly popular as a metal for wedding rings.
Palladium is usually used as an alternative to white gold in rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Like gold it is also ductile, which means that palladium can also be beaten into leaf form.
Another use for palladium in jewellery is as an alloy for gold, making white gold. Other white gold alloys include nickel and silver. Palladium white gold, however is more expensive than other versions.
From the platinum group of metals that includes platinum, iridium, ruthenium and azmium, Palladium has similar chemical properties to the other metals in the group, but has the lowest melting point and is the least dense.
Discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston, Palladium is named after the asteroid Pallas, which in turn was named after Pallas who was killed in Greek legend by Athena.
As with all precious metals, palladium jewellery will carry a hallmark declaring its quality and authenticity.
