Daniel Swarovski was born in 1862 in Bohemia, in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father taught him the art of crystal-cutting at an early age, and after visiting the International Electric Exhibition in Vienna in 1883, Daniel invented an automatic cutting machine. He then rented an old factory in the village of Wattens in Austria, and Swarovski was born in 1895. Forty years later, Daniel's son Wilhelm began experimenting with optical lenses, and Swarovski Optik was born. To this day, it produces precision lenses for telescopes, binoculars, riflescopes and other optical instruments.
Swarovski Silver Crystal is produced by combining a variety of different minerals, including quartz and lead oxide. The manufacturing process uses full lead crystal containing more than 30% lead oxide, producing a crystal with a 'deep colour spectrum'.
Swarovski figures were born in 1974 when four chandelier parts were combined to form a tiny mouse, and since then enthusiasts have taken great delight in collecting special items from the different Swarovski collections. Most of the figurines fall within the Silver Crystal range, which encompasses many smaller collections. These collections, such as Barnyard Friends and African Wildlife, are often inspired by animals.
