From the Emerald Isle to the Emerald City, this precious stone has grown in popularity because of its references in iconic film and television. But there’s a lot more about this beauty that is sure to make you green with envy.

So here is a list of 10 (mildly) interesting facts, myths and legends to impress your friends and family with about the birthstone for the month of May:

  1. Emerald is a gemstone from the Beryl family and is always green. And the deeper the colour, the more valuable the stone.
  2. Emerald is found and mined in many places around the world, from China to Switzerland – but perhaps most commonly in Colombia. We’ve booked our flights already!
  3. The name ‘emerald’ comes from the Greek word ‘smaragdus’, but is also said to be derived from words found in Hebrew, Sanskrit and Arabic script. Huh?

  5. Located at the end of the yellow brick road, Emerald City is the fictional capital city of the Land of Oz in L. Frank Baum’s book from 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In the first book the walls are green, but the city itself is not. However, everyone is made to wear green-tinted glasses as an effort to protect their eyes from the "brightness and glory" of the city.

  7. Nero, the Roman emperor, was said to watch Gladiator matches through a Beryl stone. It’s also said that he did this to change the colour of blood, or perhaps he simply inadvertently invented the world’s first sunglasses.

  9. The Romans connected emerald and other green stones to Venus, the Goddess of Love, as it was associated with growth and spring. It was the favourite stone of couples and lovers, as wearing emerald studded jewellery meant cupid would strike soon in your life.
  10. Emerald stones always have inclusions (or blemishes) – if it ever seems to be a flawless stone, it has most likely been synthetically made.
  11. Because of this more than 92% of emerald stones found and mined are treated – usually with resins and oils that eliminate scratches and blemishes and give the stone a stunning look.

  13. In medical astrology, the emerald stone is widely used for treating nervous disorders, skin allergies and speech difficulties. It is also thought to improve concentration.
  14. Emerald Isle is the poetic name for Ireland due to its green countryside, first referred to in print by William Drennan in his poem "When Erin first rose".
