Diamond: Birthstone of the Month

Diamond Birthstone

Traditionally the stone chosen by prospective husbands and – to quote Marilyn Monroe – they’re apparently a girl’s best friend. But there’s more to diamonds than you would first think.

So here is a list of 10 (quite) interesting facts to impress your friends and family with about April’s birthstone:

  1. Diamonds are nearly 100% carbon and have been formed under immense heat and pressure far beneath the Earth’s surface – creating the uniquely beautiful structure that we now know as a diamond.
  2. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance. The only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. So why is the saying “as hard as nails”?
  3. Scientists have discovered a star that is essentially a humungous diamond of ten billion trillion trillion carats in weight. They named the star Lucy after the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
  4. In 1477, Archduke Maxmillian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a gold ring set with an M spelled out in diamonds, the first reported use of a diamond on an engagement ring. That’s some serious bling!
  5. In South Africa in 1905, the largest ever diamond was discovered, weighing in at an amazing 3106 carats. The so called Cullinan diamond was eventually split into many pieces, the three largest of which can be seen on display in the Tower of London as part of the crown jewels.
  6. Diamonds are billions of years old—in some cases more than three billion years old.
  7. Many ancient cultures believed that diamonds gave the wearer strength and courage during battle, and some kings wore diamonds on their armour as they rode into battle. Not exactly camouflage is it?!
  8. Romans believed that Cupid’s arrows were tipped with diamonds – and they’ve been a symbol of love ever since.
  9. Diamonds are carried to the earth’s surface by deep volcanic eruptions, travelling from around 100 miles below ground.
  10. The word diamond derives from the Greek word “adamas,” which means invincible or indestructible. They were not wrong!
